Ok… seriously! What Does Chewing Gum And Optimized Water Have in Common? Answer: Teeth
For many years dentists have been advising that if you can’t brush after eating, grab a piece of chewing gum and chew on it for about 20-30 minutes. Ever wondered why?
And have you ever wondered why your dentist didn’t say SUGARLESS gum instead of any old gum?
The answer is in the pH of 5.5. That is the critical point at which the enamel of your teeth dissolves into never never land.
But hang on, aren’t tomatoes and lemons and pickles and vinegar and all kinds of other things lower in pH than 5.5? THEY ARE. They will dissolve away the outer enamel of your teeth just a little bit.
In the normal course of things, it’s only the outer 100 microns of enamel that are affected (a micron is 1 millionth of a meter… so pretty small).
That part of your tooth is comparable to a bank account. You always want to have a positive balance. When you eat anything that causes the pH of teeth to drop below 5.5, your enamel dissolves. It’s just like a withdrawal from your enamel bank account.
We were designed to fix that problem, however. In between eating acid-causing foods, the pH rises again and there is calcium, phosphate, etc. in your saliva to REmineralize your enamel. Your enamel bank balance builds back up and you’re good to go.
A cavity or other permanent mineral loss happens when your enamel bank balance gets overdrawn and you don’t replenish. The longer the pH of your tooth stays below 5.5, the greater the risk of cavities or other problems.
The idea of chewing gum after you eat is that it stimulates saliva flow. This neutralizes the acid and gets your pH back up above 5.5 as quickly as possible… much faster than if you didn’t chew gum. Even if the gum has sugar in it, that sugar is always flushed away fairly quickly and your teeth get back their positive enamel bank balance.
But there’s one thing many people don’t know about. Optimized Water has a strongly alkaline pH and IMMEDIATELY offsets the acid building up around your teeth right after you eat. You can immediately force the pH back up above 5.5 and stop the withdrawal of enamel from your teeth. Just follow every meal and snack with a good swish or two with optimized water for optimal teeth health.
